ARENI ANCIENT CAVE

Drinking an Armenian wine and skipping to find out where it comes from, will not work.

Right next to Areni village is located very special cave that opens the main secrets of wine history to us.

The world’s oldest known wine cellar you find in Areni cave, Armenia. Over 6100 years ago, wine has been produced here.

In 2008 several rooms were unearthed during the excavations. One of them was home to oldest winery. All the fragments in the room like clay jars, stems, seeds, also the mixture that gives the wine its color, were found in here.

In the same cave was also found the world’s know oldest leather shoe. It is EUR 7 size, leather shoe with ties , stuffed with grass, 5500 years old.

This cave is also home to the oldest known straw skirt 5900 years old, and oldest known human brain 6000 years old.

Ceramics, straw baskets, ritual items, different tools, skeletons were found in the same cave.

Scientists say that only 5% of the cave was unearthed, so we might need several generations to uncover all the treasures of the cave.
